Upper Chichester Township was officially recognized as a PA Heart & Soul community by PA Humanities at a Board of Commissioners meeting, honoring the local leaders and volunteers behind the effort. The PA Heart & Soul initiative is an equitable, resident-led community development program that uses storytelling and conversations to help people find common ground, build connections, and actively participate in planning their community’s future.

The township began its Heart & Soul journey in 2018, engaging residents through workshops, forums, and other events like “A Real Conversation About the Future of Upper Chichester.” From these activities came the creation of seven value statements, which now guide township planning and have led to new volunteer programs, economic activity, improved infrastructure, and a stronger community identity. Over five years, the project team compiled these efforts into an interactive Community Report that serves as a foundation for future decision-making.

Officials highlighted the lasting impact of inclusive planning on civic pride and collaboration. Township Manager George Needles expressed hope that resident curiosity about community achievements would endure and inspire future positive change. The recognition also followed the township’s receipt of the Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence, underscoring Upper Chichester’s commitment to engaging residents in shaping the community’s direction.
